Kroger to Implement Further COVID-19 Protective Measures, Closing Early on Easter Sunday.
News April 8, 2020 Daniel Prince
As the coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing and every-changing situation, Kroger is beginning to put more changes into effect to protect both customers and employees.
Shopping with Kroger
Kroger will begin limiting the number of customers in the store at one time to allow for proper social distancing. The number of customers allowed in the store will be up to 50% of a particular store’s building code capacity, which can vary by location. Kroger will be using a system they have had in place since 2014 called “QueVision technology” which combines infrared sensors over store doors and cash registers, predictive analytics, and real-time data feeds from point-of-sale systems, to help employees keep an accurate count on customers entering and exiting the stores at all times. Once the store has reached the 50% capacity, Kroger employees will manage waiting customers outside the building.
Kroger’s Strategies for Employees
Kroger Associates will be encouraged to wear protective masks and gloves. Kroger has ordered masks for employees nationwide, which are scheduled to arrive “later this week.” Kroger will also be installing plexiglass barriers at check out lanes and pharmacy counters. In addition, Kroger will be installing “educational floor decals” to promote social distancing at checkout lanes and counters.
Kroger Co. has enacted the “Emergency Leave Guidelines” which allow paid time off for any associate diagnosed with COVID-19 and placed under mandatory isolation. Employees will receive their standard pay for up to 14 days. Additionally, Kroger is supplying hourly grocery, supply chain, manufacturing, pharmacy, and call center employees with a “Hero Bonus,” which is $2 above their standard base pay until April 18th.
The Kroger Family of Companies also announced that they will be closing stores early on Easter Sunday, April 12th, to provide employees with “more time to rest and be with their families.” Holiday hours at all Middle Tennessee locations will be 7a.m. to 2p.m. and the pharmacy will be closed.
