To the class of 2020; you did it. Despite the hard left turn life took this year, you did it. It may have been... To the Class of 2020; Congratulations!

To the class of 2020; you did it. Despite the hard left turn life took this year, you did it. It may have been at your parents’ kitchen table through Zoom meetings and group chats, but you did it. You became a part of history this year. “The Class of 2020: Quarantined” as many have put it. This year has brought devastation, loss, and uncertainty on a global scale. It may feel frivolous to grieve the loss of your once in a life time, coming of age experiences, some of them four years in the making while the world around you seemingly crashes. This isn’t so. Graduation is a big deal. Why else would it be celebrated with “pomp and circumstance?” Graduation day is meant to be a distinct moment in your life, as it has been for countless others in the past.

This was supposed to be your year, too. The year you crossed that stage, accepted that diploma, and became a graduate. You were supposed to be having senior trips and awards ceremonies. You were supposed to be sharing slices of cake with your closest friends and family, who held a party just to celebrate you. It was supposed to be the time of your life, the best summer you ever had was coming, free from school and whimsically transitioning into adulthood. It seems everything has been left up for question. What if? What now?

Many have lost their jobs, their savings, or perhaps their plans for the future. Families across the world are grieving the loss of stability, and yes, the loss of loved ones. This season has been hard for you too. While a pandemic is reshaping humanity itself, you are watching and living it in real-time alongside the rest of the world. This alone should be a testament to your resilience. Graduation is going to look quite different this year. Never before have people driven up to get their diplomas, staggered by name and time, or walked in a socially-distanced parade. Regardless of how your ceremony may look this year, you are celebrated. The community and world around you see you and your accomplishments. Not only did you graduate after thirteen years of hard work, you graduated during a major historical event. That was you, a major part of history.

Life will take you many directions, that you have quickly learned this year. You will go beyond high school into adulthood, college, or wherever else life whisks you away to. Life may look more different than it ever has before, and it may look different for a long time. You will persevere, conquer, and thrive. You will learn lessons about life that you would have never learned in school. You will learn so much about yourself beyond your academic achievements. You will learn who you are, and you will make life yours as this season shapes you into the person you will someday become. To the students in Coffee County, your community is so proud of you. We here at Coffee County News, are so proud of you. What an honor it is to serve a resilient community full of what we think are the best people around.
