Manchester Police responded to a call Saturday morning (Feb. 9) in regards to a female displaying erratic behavior in Manchester Walmart. The officer was then lead to her, and upon discussing the situation with the woman, she was escorted out of the store.
After being questioned further on her situation, according to a public statement written by District Attorney Craig Northcott, “the woman escalated the situation, and the officer was forced to detain her. During his efforts to detain her, the woman collapsed.” The woman was taken to Unity Regional Medical center for examination, and was later transferred to St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. She died in the evening hours the same day the public statement reports.
According to the statement a “significant amount of methamphetamine” was located in the woman’s possession.
Per Craig Northcott’s public statement, “At this point, it appears that the woman died from a medical issue unrelated to officer’s conduct. There is no reason to believe that the officer acted inappropriately or in any way contributed to the death of the woman” Northcott has requested an investigation by the TBI and an autopsy to determine the cause of death. It will be several weeks before any results, but Northcott states “my office will be taking no action in this case.”
“This is a sad situation and I offer my prayers and condolence for the family of the descendant. I have withheld the descendant’s name to respect her and her family’s privacy. I would ask the same from others as her family grieves the unexpected and sudden loss of their loved one.” – District Attorney Craig Northcott
