FedEx are warning customers this week not to click on a suspicious link sent via text message or email. The shipping retailer tweeted an alert out on Wednesday, January 22nd, pointing to a recent phishing scam involving texts or emails that appear to be from FedEx.

Consumers receive a message alerting them they have a package with “tracking code” and a link directing them to “set delivery preferences.” This link is FedEx stated that all e-mails and texts messages that appear to be suspicious or fake should be deleted immediately and reported to them using the email abuse@fedex.com.

According to the FedEx website some common signs of online scams are:

  • Unexpected requests for money in return for delivery of a package, often with a sense of urgency.
  • Requests for personal and/or financial information.
  • Links to misspelled or slightly altered website addresses (fedx.com, fed-ex.com, etc.)
  • Spelling and grammatical errors or excessive use of capitalization and exclamation points.
  • Claims that you have won a large sum of money in a lottery or settlement.
  • Certificate errors or lack of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for sensitive activities

FedEx states that it “does not request via unsolicited mail or email, payment or personal information in return for goods in transit or in FedEx custody. If you receive any of these or similar communications, do not reply or cooperate with the sender. If your interaction with the website resulted in financial loss, you should contact your bank immediately.”
